City Holds Poster Contest to Announce Fair Housing Month

April 15, 2003

Mayor Butch Callery announced today the kick-off of a poster contest celebrating April as Fair Housing Month.  Fifth grade students from Covington’s public and catholic schools will design posters giving their interpretation of Fair Housing.

Covington artist, Peter Jaquish, will help guide the students in their artistic endeavors while John Fisher from the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s Commission on Human Rights explains what Fair Housing means.

“The goal behind the art contest is to introduce the concept of Fair Housing to students their, families, and the community at large,” said Mayor Callery.

Prizes will be awarded to students whose posters best capture this year’s national Fair Housing theme, “Welcome Home.” The artwork will be judged by members of Covington’s Human Rights Commission during the week of April 28.

Fair Housing Laws protect individuals and families who are seeking housing and home loans from discrimination such as race, color, sex, religion, national or ethnic origin, familial status, or disability.

Mayor Callery said, “This year happens to be the 35th anniversary of the passage of the Federal Fair Housing Act. To help celebrate this milestone, the poster contest is a great way to kick off community participation for years to come.”
