Covington youngsters launch cleanup campaign
By Peggy Kreimer The activists are students in the Covington Community Center's Arts in Action program -- an eight-week leadership program for youth ages 8 to 15. The leadership teams met with leaders from the Covington Neighborhood Collaborative, toured neighborhoods, and chose litter, blight, safety and the need for more green space as their issues. The teams will present their projects from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Holmes High School auditorium. The program includes performances, art exhibits and presentations developed while working with local artists Peter D. Jaquish, Jackie Slone, Tom Reece and Sharon Murphy. Projects included developing a television commercial, banners, recycling bins, mosaic stepping stones and producing skits dealing with their issues. The Arts in Action teams plan to put some of that art in action this spring. They will be part of the Great American Cleanup on April 26. They also plan to work on school-based recycling program and a marketing campaign promoting more green space in Covington. The Arts in Action program is funded by grants from the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice, Covington Independent Schools, United Way and the City of Covington. The presentation on Wednesday is open to the public. The program includes students from John G. Carlisle, Sixth District, Ninth District, Thomas Edison and Latonia elementaries and Two Rivers Middle and Holmes Junior High schools.
