Cincinnati Enquirer Tuesday, November 19, 2002 Kids' murals reflect school name
By Sue Kiesewetter WEST CHESTER TWP. - By year's end, students at Freedom Elementary School will have a visible reminder of the "Freedom Pride" character education skills they are learning. Under the guidance of Covington mural artist Peter Jaquish, sixth-graders are painting two large murals on the school's walls, one 7ft-by-12 feet, the other 6-by-10. The first shows students putting their skills into action. The second depicts the pupils reading, working on science and other active learning scenarios against a patriotic background that includes the U.S. flag. Although Mr. Jaquish put the final design together for each mural, the ideas for it came from the students. "The good thing is, there are real kids and real teachers in this," said Breana Williams, 11. "It represents our school." Art teacher Joy Hunter took pictures of students and gave those to Mr. Jaquish. Sixth-graders brainstormed ideas. From that, Mr. Jaquish created two small murals and projected them onto the walls. Then images were penciled in before painting began two weeks ago. It will continue each Monday for another five or six weeks. "They had a lot of good ideas," said Mr. Jaquish, who also painted a mural for the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky. "I looked for a constant idea that was repeated and used that to create the mural." "I did suggest ideas," said Alex McCane, 12, as he applied a grayish blue paint to a part of the background. "I drew the American flag and a group of people holding hands." "You're dealing with a sense of scale and the challenge of standing to paint," Mr. Jaquish said. "You're lucky to see 1 or 2 square feet" of the mural. A Learning Links grants and proceeds from a fund-raiser are paying for the paints and to have Mr. Jaquish work with the students, Ms. Hunter said. |
